TULUS was born in Bukittinggi, West Sumatera, Indonesia 28 years ago. He hold a bachelor degree in an architecture with endless love for music. Being raised in a family of no musicians, his fondness toward the beauty of melody might already emerge since he was still a young boy. Back then, it was his own mother that introduced him to various kind of music.
In his continuous study on architecture, he rather finds an exceptional bond with music itself. Though seems contradictive, for him, music and architecture have many uncharted resemblances. In music, he leads to appreciate beauty, while preserving its structure and function. So does in architecture, where these three aspects are the basic foundations of an architectural work. One of his adored figures is the Japanese Architect Tadao Ando.
He has written dozens of songs. Some of the selected ones have been released into two music albums through TULUS CO., an independent record label company that he co-founded with his older brother, Riri Muktamar.
The first album was released at the end of 2011, well acclaimed and received many positive responses. The Magazine, Rolling Stone Indonesia put this album on the top chart of Indonesia's best album of 2013, awarded TULUS as Rookie of The Year 2013.
TULUS and his Overseas Performances
At the end of 2013, TULUS was invited by Indonesian Students Community in Hamburg, Germany. He presented his music to Indonesian and Germany audiences in Friedrich-Ebert Halle of Hamburg.
October 2014, TULUS became one of performer that sing in Anugerah Planet Muzik 2014 awarded night in Singapore and live on air in Malaysia and Indonesia. He also brought home one award as Best New Male Artist APM 2015.
In May 2015, TULUS represented Indonesia for an Asia Pacific Festival and an International Music Conference of Music Matters 2015, held in Singapore. During that respected event, TULUS performed twice in the festival and also presented his music to the conference attendees.
Couple months later, in September 2015, TULUS was invited to perform in Soundsekerta 2015. An event created by Indonesian students community in Melbourne, Australia.
TULUS is also invited to a Hamazo 10th Festival in Hamamatsu, Japan. He look forward to the very first time presenting his music to Japanese, at this October 2015.
In the end of October 2015, TULUS will perform in Macquarie University Auditorium, Sydney. This event also created by Indonesian student community in Sydney, Australia.
TULUS x Project Collaboration
His music albums were not the only works that he created during his musical journey. TULUS has been doing some collaboration project for sort of brands with activations campaigns.
In the middle of 2014, TULUS got a chance to create original soundtrack for an Indonesian movie, titled "3 Nafas Likas". "Lekas", was a song that he created for this movie.
During third quarter of 2014 up to second quarter of 2015, TULUS act as a brand ambassador for Bend The Rules International campaign, held by Hewlett-Packard. In this campaign, TULUS has also released a brand new theme song in supporting this particular campaign.
In mid 2015, TULUS created another song with RAN (an Indonesian music group), for another activation project that will be made for an international mouthwash brand, Listerine.
As a live performer, he has performed for so many stages all over Indonesia, and even abroad. From Java Jazz, Java Soundsfair, Bali Live Jazz Festival, Soulnation, up to the latest performance in Melbourne Town Hall, Australia. He has proven himself as an amazing yet compliant performer.
TULUS has experienced six solo concerts in collaboration with local Event Organisers. TULUS Production (TULUS Pro.) is a dedicated team under TULUS co., which was developed for live performance production of TULUS.
Those concerts are titled, TULUS: An Introduction (2011), TULUS: Beyond Sincere (2012) and TULUS: Diorama Concert (2013), TULUS: Gajah Concert Bandung (2014); TULUS: Gajah Concert Jakarta (2014); TULUS: Gajah Concert Yogyakarta (2015).
When it comes to and idol, his greatest admiration is an Indonesian music legend; Chrisye. TULUS' music follows both the classics and the modern tunes. His influencer varies from Ella Fitzgerald to Macy Gray, from Tony Bennett to Glenn Fredly.
TULUS x Gajah Album
By the end of 2013, TULUS finally finished the recording his second album. After almost 2 years venturing throughout Indonesia music industry, it was in the beginning of 2014 when TULUS chose to (once again) introduce his new musical works. 30.000 CDs of TULUS-Gajah album were produced less than 15 days after the album released. TULUS-Gajah album also became the only music album on Bahasa that got in to top 10 best selking music album in iTunes Asia.
The title of the album, Gajah, was chosen due to the history of TULUS' childhood. His friend called him Gajah, as a 'nickname'. "Gajah" is also the title of one of the song inside the album. Through his second album, TULUS hopes that he can share various stories to his audience, having such stories beautifully packaged in a newly fresh instrumental explorations, delivered elegantly in his enchanting vocal.
Songs like "Tanggal Merah", "Satu Hari di Bulan Juni", "Bumerang", "Gajah" and some others, are some of his works that you can find inside the second album.
TULUS and his music videos
6 music videos for both TULUS's album have already released through his YouTube channel. TULUS was also actively participated on the concept and production process. Sewindu, Baru, Gajah, and Jangan Cintai Aku Apa Adanya are music videos that were basically created based on his concept and ideas. For Teman Hidup and Sepatu music video, TULUS worked as a director, with his best friends in a small team. "Sepatu" music video was shoot in Hamburg, Germany and "Baru" music video was shoot in Tokyo, Japan.
